bamboo farm

1. Moso (Phyllostachys pubescens) is cultivated to an optimum age of 5-6 years before being harvested. In this short period of time, the bamboo stalk has a diameter of nearly 12” and can reach staggering heights of 100’.

2. The stalks are inspected and then processed into slats which are to become the base material used in making strand woven bamboo. Very little waste is created in the process; this “waste” biomass finds its way into other useful products and as a renewable energy source.

3. The slats are now treated with either a bath of water and hydrogen peroxide (non-chlorine bleach solution) which creates the “natural” tones of Foundations bamboo. Alternatively, slats are baked in a kiln which caramelizes the sugars and provides the rich dark browns of our “carbonized” or “coffee” tones.

4. The slats are ready to be laminated into strand woven logs after a period of stabilization. The lamination is completed by dipping the slats in a resin and compressing under tremendous pressure. It is this pressure treatment that gives strand bamboo its density, stability, and durability.

5. Following lamination, the logs are left to cure in a climate controlled environment. Once cured, the logs are rough sawn into planks we call blanks and are set to stabilize for another period of time. It is this attention to detail in the manufacturing process that ensures Foundations' renowned quality.

6. The strand woven blanks are later milled and planed into useable boards. At this point, the boards are precision milled on all four sides with tongue and groove or click and lock joining mechanisms.

7. The milled boards are now moved through our state-of-the-art coating system. All sides of the board are coated with a 3-layer sealer coat to protect against moisture. The top coat is a 7-layer, UV-cured, aluminum oxide-modified, water-based polyurethane. Largely automated, this process ensures a consistent, durable,
blemish-free finish.

8. Throughout the manufacturing process, Foundations Bamboo undergoes rigorous quality control that is unrivaled in the industry: from the raw materials, to the curing process, to the milling and finishing. Quality control is how Foundations has earned its reputation.
